β Comae Berenices is the brightest star in the constellation Coma Berenices. It is about 30 light-years (ly) away and has an apparent magnitude of 4.25 mag. β Comae Berenices can be observed with the naked eye, but is difficult to spot in urban areas with high light pollution.
The Bayer designation “Beta” (β) suggests at first glance that it is the second brightest star in the constellation. In fact, however, its apparent magnitude is slightly higher than that of α Comae Berenices.
